Health Reasons Force Klugman’s Withdrawal From ‘Twelve Angry Men’

The Emmy Award-winning actor Jack Klugman, best known for playing Oscar on the 1970s television series “The Odd Couple,” has bowed out of the George Street Playhouse’s upcoming production of “Twelve Angry Men,” the theater announced this week. Mr. Klugman, a throat cancer survivor who will turn 90 next month, is withdrawing due to health reasons after concluding that he needed to stay close to his Los Angeles home and his physician there. (George Street Playhouse is in New Brunswick, N.J.)

Mr. Klugman had been set to play Juror No. 9 in the production of the court jury drama “Twelve Angry Men,” with performances starting on Tuesday night – 55 years after he had a breakout performance as Juror No. 5 in the 1957 film “12 Angry Men,” which also starred Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb. In an interview in December, when his casting for the play was announced, Mr. Klugman said he was in good health and was optimistic that his voice and stamina would hold up for the run of the production. The theater company announced that the actor David Canary, best known for his Emmy-winning performances as twins Adam and Stuart Chandler on “All My Children,” would replace Mr. Klugman. The play is scheduled to run through April 8.
